Ken’s Smoking Pipe (2016) is a response to the legacy of the late Nigerian environmental and human rights activist, Ken Saro Wiwa. Combining scans of his collection of smoking pipes – found in his office in Port Harcourt, Nigeria – with a sound montage of Saro Wiwa’s speeches, the work addresses the (im-)materiality of photography and questions the role of the object as a repository for memory.
