Mysterious Minds (2004) is the first body of work I developed as a young photographer. I had been reading a lot of books about the craft and history of photography, and I came across Dorothea Lange, whose Depression era work I found interesting. There was something about the texture of the images and the way she photographed – really connecting to her subject matter – that was striking. In the area of Lagos where I lived at the time, there were a number of people with mental disabilities making their homes on the streets. I was disturbed by their plight and, referring back to Lange's iconic images of the Great Depression, inspired to embark on my own visual exploration of the internal and external conditions of these vulnerable members of society.
