Waiting for the Caravan (2019) is inspired by and pays tribute to the legendary South African jazz musician, Hugh Masekela - described by musicologist Dr. Lindelwa Dalamba as a “nomad in exile”. Simultaneously a meditation on my personal wanderings within the continent as an African artist, the work traces the musician’s pan-African journeys - personal, musical and political. These are reflected in the lyrics to some of his most well-known songs, including Been Such a Long Time Gone (1974), from which the title for this work is drawn.
